Lebanon Valley College Senior Allyson Butz Receives Fulbright for Germany
Fifth-consecutive year an LVC student named Fulbright
Annville, PA (04/29/2020) — Allyson Butz '20 (Reinholds, Pa.) became the 11th LVC student in the past five years to receive a Fulbright award. Butz joins an elite group of Valley scholars who have helped the College be named a Top Producing Institution for a Fulbright U.S. Student Program for four consecutive years.
Butz, an elementary education major with minors in German and Global Studies, was selected to receive a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant award to Germany for the 2020-21 academic year, noted Dr. Philip Benesch, professor and faculty director of external scholarships and fellowships. She had previously studied in Wurzburg, Germany, through the College's Zerbe Summer Study Abroad Scholarship.
With a near-perfect GPA, Butz has been inducted into four national and international honor societies: Sigma Iota Rho (International Studies), Phi Sigma Iota (Foreign Language), Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education), and Sigma Alpha Pi (National Society of Leadership and Success). She's also served as an LVC Peer Tutor instructing students who seek help in German and statistics.
Butz is active throughout campus as a member and leader of the Student Pennsylvania State Education Association (SPSEA), volunteer for the annual International Food Festival, Servants of Christ, DiscipleMakers, and a former member of the Pride of The Valley Marching Band. In the community, she served as a leader of SPSEA's Children's Day for local first- and second-grade students, for a STEM program at a local elementary school, and for a German Culture Day held for high school students.

The Fulbright Program
Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 380,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and other professionals-chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential-with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The Fulbright Program is funded by an annual appropriation from the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State, and it is managed, coordinated, and overseen by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
