2013 Nov 20

Savana Kalnoski of Reading, PA, was elected by the Lebanon Valley College student body to serve as a Student Government member.

Student Government is comprised of 36 full-time students. Twenty-seven upper-class students are elected from the student body each spring for a one-year term beginning in September. This includes four class officers, four class representatives and a commuter representative from each returning class. In addition, nine first-year students are elected in September. Student Government officers are elected each spring from among the 27 upperclass students.

One of Student Government's major responsibilities is to foster understanding, communication, and cooperation among students, faculty, and administrators. It serves as the channel for all student recommendations for establishing or changing policy and communicates these recommendations to the appropriate administrative offices or faculty committees. Student Government also approves the constitutions of all campus organizations, regulates the elections of student government members and class officers, and appoints student government members and other students to campus committees. They also plan major campus-wide events including Homecoming, Winter Formal, and Dutchmen Day.

Each fall, Student Government member participate in a leadership retreat. This fall, students had the opportunity to participate in the "In the Footsteps of Leaders" leadership program in Gettysburg. Taking place on the Gettysburg Battlefield itself, the program incorporated leadership lessons into an interactive tour and retelling of the three-day battle. Throughout the experience, the students recognized the value that the Battle of Gettysburg has in American history and used the happenings on the battleground as a model for modern, team-building applications. The students used the consequences from the soldiers' actions and decisions to engage in discussions about effective communication, adaptability, and leadership styles.
