Malia Waltman of Gordonville Receives Allwein Scholarship

2016 Aug 4

Malia Waltman of Gordonville, Pa., is one of four students in Lebanon Valley College's Class of 2020 to receive the prestigious John Bowman Allwein Scholarship, established by Dr. Lewis E. Thayne, LVC president, through the generosity of Dr. John "Jack" Bowman Allwein '56.

Malia, a graduate of Pequea Valley High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in digital communications at The Valley. Malia, who plays the flute and piccolo, performed with the Pequea Valley High School concert band and chamber choir. She also was involved with the school's yearbook, stage crew, Future Business Leaders of America, Brave Club, peer helpers, and local youth group.

The Allwein Scholarship provides full tuition to LVC, as well as a $2,500 annual stipend for such academic purposes as studying abroad, experiencing internships, or conducting research. Recipients are selected through a competitive process from among the brightest high school students who show interest in LVC. These scholars are chosen for their academic accomplishments and leadership potential.

Dr. Jeff Robbins, chair of religion and philosophy, professor of religion, and director of the American Studies Program, will advise and mentor these students throughout their years at LVC.

The John Bowman Allwein Scholars Program is the College's most prestigious honor for incoming freshmen and is named in honor of the late U.S. Army veteran and well-known oral surgeon. Dr. Bowman's legacy includes the largest estate gift to the College in its history, as well as the establishment of several additional named scholarships that support additional LVC students each year.
