Kristin Robeson Participated in Lebanon Valley College's Service-Learning Trip to Puerto Rico

2015 Jun 10

Kristin Robeson of Manheim, Pa., traveled to Caguas, Puerto Rico in May with 10 other students and three staff members, as part of Lebanon Valley College's a one-week, high-impact experience.

Robeson graduated from Manheim Central High School and is pursuing a bachelor of arts in sociology.

Each morning Robeson and the other students assisted at a residential facility for seniors and a shelter for victims of domestic violence, while spending afternoons tutoring children in two elementary schools. Most interactions involved an opportunity for students to practice their Spanish language skills since very little English is spoken in Caguas.

Participants on the trip, many traveling on a service-learning trip for the first time, experienced both ends of the age spectrum during their trip. They visited primary schools, playing at recess and tutoring children, while also making time to play bingo with senior citizens at local senior centers. Throughout the week, students worked hard cleaning, painting, gardening, and assisting with serving and cleaning up after meals.

"Helping out all of the kids in need was a highlight, especially getting to play with the kids at recess and seeing how much fun they had and their smiles as they were playing. The kids really enjoyed teaching us their games and playing with us," said Megan Kimmel '17, a biochemistry and molecular biology major.

Anna Quinn '17, who has also visited Peru and Honduras for similar service trips, appreciated the chance to connect with the adults.

"The women I spoke with at the domestic violence home were by far the strongest women I ever met," said Quinn, a Spanish and global studies double major. "The inspirational message they gave me about being independent and loving myself underscored the courage they possess to stay positive through their life journey."

In addition to their volunteer service during the day, students spent their evenings learning about the history and culture of Puerto Rico from two professors, including one of Dr. Guzman's past instructors. Toward the end of the trip, the group enjoyed a catamaran excursion and coral reef exploration off the coast of Fajardo, not far from San Juan.

Through the course of the trip, Sharon Sees '17 learned much about the school system in Puerto Rico and the importance of encouraging students to go to college.

"Only around 60% of students in Puerto Rico graduate high school, and just from working with these kids for one week, I know each and every one of them has the potential for an amazing future," said Sees, who is pursuing health science and Spanish degrees. "I really hope we made an impact when we told them about our experiences in college."
