Heather LaSalle of Birdsboro Presents at PA-NAME Conference
2014 May 7
Lebanon Valley College junior Heather LaSalle of Birdsboro accompanied Dr. Ann Berger-Knorr, associate professor of education at Lebanon Valley College to the 16th Annual Conference of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (PA-NAME) at Temple University in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 12, 2014. In the workshop presentation, "Visions of Social Justice in Elementary and Middle School Classrooms," Berger-Knorr and LaSalle facilitated participants in the exploration of the six elements of social justice in multicultural picture books and discussed units of study in K-8 classrooms.
Using Picower's (2012) framework of social justice in the elementary classroom, participants explored quality multicultural picture books and identified Picower's six elements of social justice including: Self Love and Knowledge, Respect for Others, Issues of Social Injustice, Social Movements and Social Change, Awareness Raising, and Social Action within and across texts. Participants selected mentor texts and considered units of study in K-8 classrooms.
LaSalle is pursuing a bachelor of science in Early Childhood Education and Special Education.
