Haley Wagner Presents Research at 19th Annual UMBC Symposium

2016 Oct 26

Haley Wagner of Mechanicsburg, Pa. is one of 16 LVC science students who recently presented research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences at UMBC in October. Wagner, a graduate of Cumberland Valley High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in biology at The Valley.

LVC students who received awards for their poster presentations included:

Alyssa Smale - 1st Place - Chemical Sciences

Corine Mendenhall - 1st Place - Chemical Sciences

Jasmine Olvany - 2nd Place - Chemical Sciences

Morgan Webb - 2nd Place - Biological Sciences

Nicholas Scullin - 2nd Place - Biological Sciences

Dr. Wally Patton, associate professor of chemistry, and Dr. Michelle Rasmussen, assistant professor of chemistry, accompanied the students to UMBC.

The undergraduate research symposium was sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (at the National Institutes of Health) and the University of Maryland. The highlight of the day were the morning and afternoon poster sessions showcasing research in the areas of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology. Altogether, 286 presentations were given by undergraduates from colleges and universities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region - more than 550 attendees were pre-registered for this event.

Student researchers attended from both small colleges like LVC and top research universities such as Johns Hopkins and the University of Virginia. Students were judged on the quality of their presentation, their understanding of the work presented, their general knowledge of science in the area of their work and the level to which their individual efforts contributed to the findings presented and overall work accomplished.
