Emily Spurlin Attended UMBC Undergraduate Research Symposium

2015 Oct 13

Emily Spurlin of Enola, Pa., recently attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences. Spurlin, a graduate of East Pennsboro High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in biology at The Valley.

The Symposium welcomed mentor-approved contributions from undergraduates investigating any aspect of chemistry, biology, and biochemistry. These advances were disseminated in a day-long event that included 327 student poster presentations among the more than 400 beginning scientists, mentors, and other guests representing 55 schools from 20 states. The event featured two poster sessions in three different categories: Biochemical & Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences, and Chemical Sciences. Posters were judged by panels of participating mentors and other qualified attendees. Judges ranked first and second place posters in each category, and presented awards at the end of the event.

Lebanon Valley College poster winners included:

Cody Lloyd - 1st place

Joshua Kauffman, Nathaniel Ginder, Victoria Seader, Alyssa Smale - 2nd place

Lebanon Valley College encourages students to be engaged in genuine research. It is through individual research projects, such as those seen at the Symposium, that students gain a truly functional knowledge of the principles that they learn in their coursework.
