Emily Spurlin Attended UMBC Undergraduate Research Symposium

2014 Nov 6

Emily Spurlin of Enola, Pa., recently attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences. Spurlin is a graduate of East Pennsboro High School, and is pursuing a bachelor of science in biology at The Valley. Spurlin won second place in her group.

The Symposium welcomed mentor-approved contributions from undergraduates investigating any aspect of chemistry, biology, and biochemistry. These advances were disseminated in a day-long event that offered nearly 200 student contributions and gathered more than 400 beginning scientists, mentors, and other guests. The event featured two poster sessions with posters judged by panels of participating mentors and other qualified attendees. Judges ranked first and second place posters in each category, and presented awards at the end of the event.

Lebanon Valley College encourages students to be engaged in genuine research. It is through individual research projects, such as those seen at the Symposium, that students actually begin to gain a truly functional knowledge of the principles that they learn in their coursework.
