Daniel Upchurch of Parkesburg Spending Semester in New Zealand

2015 Jan 16

Daniel Upchurch of Parkesburg, Pa. is one of 21 Lebanon Valley College students studying away for the spring 2015 semester. Upchurch is spending the semester in New Zealand as part of the College's study abroad program, which includes 12 foreign countries and two stateside internship opportunities.

This program offers students the opportunity to take four courses abroad in almost any concentration. The University of Waikato is located in the city of Hamilton, New Zealand's fourth largest city in the north-central region of the North Island, only 90 minutes south of Auckland. The Waikato area offers a wide range of recreational activities with many of New Zealand's major activities just a short drive from the University. These include excellent surfing and swimming beaches, forest parks, lakes, thermal hot pools, and limestone caves.

Upchurch, a graduate of Octorara Area High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in physics at The Valley.

The College is in the process of developing a handful of new short-term programs that would make it easier for busy students to study off-campus. This spring, two new course-embedded programs were offered in Italy and England. By the time they graduate, nearly 20 percent of LVC students will have spent time studying and traveling abroad, experiences that will shape and inform the rest of their lives as global citizens.
