Brittany Fleisher Travels to Washington, D.C. For European Union Simulation

2016 Nov 21

Brittany Fleisher of Newport, Pa. recently participated in the annual simulated European Union (EU) parliamentary session in Washington, D.C. Fleisher, a graduate of Greenwood High School, is pursuing a bachelor of arts in global studies and economics at The Valley.

For the last nine years, the EU Simulation course has been taught each fall by either Dr. Diane Johnson or Dr. Philip Benesch, both associate professors of politics. Students spend the first two months of the semester learning about the EU. In November, the students and faculty travel to Washington, D.C. to take part in a simulation along with students from about a dozen other colleges and universities in the Middle Atlantic region.

This year, LVC students took on the roles of Swedish and Slovak ministers and parliamentarians, as well as the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk. The themes of the legislative directive under debate in 2016 were the current migration crisis in Europe and Brexit.
